Commodore Classroom #1 (with Reception): A Day in the Lab: Vanderbilt Center for Addiction Research
Join us from 9:30-10 am for pre-reception with Provost Cybele Raver, Athletic Director Candice Storey Lee, and the Director of the Addiction Center Dr. Erin Calipari, to learn about the Vanderbilt Center for Addiction Research (VCAR) and recent impacts of the cutting-edge research happening in the lab. Then, in the Commodore Classroom beginning at 10am, Calipari will also be joined by student researchers from the Center who will share insights into their lab experience - favorite moments, what drives their work and more.
Erin Calipari, Director of the Vanderbilt Center for Addiction Research and Associate Professor, Pharmacology, has worked with leaders in the field to develop a research program that is focused on solving the substance use disorder crisis. Her lab has made seminal discoveries on how drug use changes the brain at the systems and molecular level to give rise to addiction.

Generative AI tools, like ChatGPT, are going to transform industries and ways of life. Join Dr. Jesse Spencer-Smith for an exploration of these new tools. Spencer-Smith, who has led AI workshops for executives from Fortune 500 companies, teaches classes in AI and leads interdisciplinary research teams exploring practical AI, will discuss the opportunities and capabilities of these language models and how they are going to transform the way we live.

and Mark Williams of the Vanderbilt AI Law Lab (VAILL) will discuss the ethical
considerations surrounding AI in legal practice, provide insights into
effective prompt engineering for legal use cases, and offer strategies for
leveraging AI to enhance legal expertise. Through live demonstrations and interactive

Aging and the Brain: A Natural Part of Life
Join Dr.
William Petrie, BA’68, MD’72, Emeritus Professor, for an engaging
conversation on the subject of aging and the brain. Dr. Petrie has spent much
of his career in the treatment and research of age-related neuro-degenerative
illnesses, such as Alzheimer’s disease. He has conducted investigational
treatments and at Vanderbilt, focused on behavioral and cognitive aspects of
Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, frontotemporal and other dementing disorders.
A special interest has been the effects of lifestyle modifications and risk factors for diseases of aging and what can be done to improve our future.

School is proud to house eight legal clinics that allow students to dive into
various law fields, representing real clients and arguing actual cases under
expert guidance. Students in the Stanton Foundation First Amendment Clinic
represent individual and organizational clients in matters related to speech,
press, assembly, and petition rights, including cases related to social media
blocking by government officials, defamation defense, and access to public
records.
The Turner
Family Community Enterprise Clinic allows students to represent small
businesses and nonprofit organizations in a range of transactional matters,
including entity formation, governance, tax, contracts, employment,
intellectual property, and risk management.

Music of the 1970s
This talk will explore the musical sounds of the 1970s as a reflection of and shaping force on the decade. Through an interdisciplinary study, participants will gain a better understanding of the ways the decade's music was both a direct expression of the cultural context in which it was produced and a profound influence on the trajectory of musical sound and popular culture in the 20th and 21st centuries.
Robert Fry is a principal senior lecturer in musicology and ethnomusicology at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music, where he teaches courses in global music, popular music, fandom, and music tourism. His research focuses on tourism and the role of fandom in the production of a musical place, which he has written about in articles, edited volumes, and his book, Performing Nashville: Music Tourism and Country Music’s Main Street.
