Taking Measure of Student Activism: The Student Health Coalition, 50 Years Later

In the late 1960's through the early 1980s, a group of Vanderbilt students who were concerned about social justice joined the Student Health Coalition, (SHC). They were motivated to support health care and community-based, participatory initiatives in rural Tennessee, especially in Appalachia. As part of the SHC, they partnered closely with residents - listening, assessing needs, and collaborating on solutions.

Their work laid the foundation for a community-centered approach to healthcare that remains relevant today. Discover some key outcomes of the SHC efforts, how the SHC made a lasting impact, and how its legacy offers a model for addressing today’s healthcare challenges.

The conversation will be moderated by Dr. Carrie Plummer, MSN’05 and Associate Professor and feature classmates Diane Lauver, BSN’75, Polly McClanahan McArthur, BSN’75 and Irwin Venick, JD’75.
